Tips for CELPIP Speaking Task 3 (Describing a Scene)

- CELPIP Speaking Task 3: Describing a Scene

(Preparation Time: 30 seconds; Speaking Time: 60 seconds)

1. Use a conversational tone.

2. Start with 'Hi' followed by a fictitious name (as if you are talking to a friend).
E.g., Hi Mike

3. Mention an overview of the place: What place is it? What it looks like?

4. How many people are there?
It could be a specific number or
It could be a comparatively vague statement like 'There are quite a few people here' or 'The place is rather crowded' or 'The place is not too crowded'.

5. Give details of what the people are doing.
If the number is small, you could talk about them individually.
If the number is large, divide them into approximately 3 sub-groups during your preparation time and decide what you will say about each sub-group.

6. After this, you can give additional details, such as the colours of the place or the colours of the clothes. E.g., 'Blue and gray are the dominant colours here'.
You could also mention what kind of clothes people are wearing in the scene, such as 'Most people here dressed formally/casually'.

7. Avoid using the words people, person, and individual if possible.
E.g., if it is a supermarket, some words that can be used are cashier, employee, staff member, and customer.
If it is an airport, some words that can be used are ground staff, security staff, and passengers.
